Helen Sherwood: Dip LAMDA, PGCE in Drama with Distinction, QTS, Full Enhanced DBS Certificate, MSTSD.
I am a professionally trained actor and fully qualified Drama Teacher, with 18+ years’ experience. I trained on the Three Year Acting Course at the world-renowned drama school, LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art), gaining a Diploma in Professional Acting. I went on to act professionally in both theatre and television (including roles in Shakespeare touring theatre companies and on 'The Bill' and 'Coronation Street') before deciding to put all my passion and energy into teaching Drama and Acting.
I gained a PGCE in Drama with Distinction from Manchester Metropolitan University, before going on to teach Drama, Theatre and Acting in schools for 10 years. I taught both in Manchester and internationally, at an independent school in Mexico, where I was Head of Drama and my lessons were consistently graded as Outstanding.
I am a very experienced LAMDA Examinations, Acting and Speech & Drama teacher and am a member of the Society of Teachers of Speech and Drama (STSD), with my students consistently gaining excellent results, as well as developing confidence and honing performance and communication skills.
My students have gained places at the National Youth Theatre and at drama schools including: Royal Central School of Speech & Drama, Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS), Manchester School of Theatre, Mountview Academy, Guildford School of Acting and Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. They have also appeared in stage productions, films and television shows.
I currently work as a private tutor and peripatetic LAMDA Exams & Drama teacher and Drama Club Leader at various primary and secondary schools in Macclesfield and Cheshire. I have been consistently praised for supporting, challenging and always bringing out the very best in all my students!
I believe the arts have a vital role to play in the development of young people and love to see the enjoyment and pride in my students both when they have performed to the very best of their ability, and when they have made fabulous progress! Their creativity and dedication are always inspiring! Students have truly excelled in their LAMDA exams, gaining outstanding results, with several going on to win 1st prize at Speech and Drama Festivals, successfully auditioning for the NYT (National Youth Theatre), and going on to train professionally at prestigious drama schools and universities.
In Drama Clubs, students explore a variety of stimuli and use their imagination, teamwork and acting skills to create engaging performances to share with their peers.
I believe that nurturing talent and developing creativity, confidence, communication skills, independence, empathy, individuality, a sense of freedom to explore ideas, and self-motivation in young people through Speech & Drama allows them to develop lifelong skills and to thrive in all aspects of their lives.
Drama and the arts educate, inspire, entertain, challenge, engage and open our eyes, hearts and minds. I believe the arts nourish our souls and contribute to our wellbeing and happiness.
My students have been awarded first place in several Speech and Drama and Shakespeare Festivals (in the UK and Internationally) and have achieved outstanding results in their LAMDA examinations.

About LAMDA exams in Performance and Communication:
LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) is a world-renowned Drama School and a long-established centre of excellence; it is the oldest Drama School in the UK. In 2018, Benedict Cumberbatch succeeded Timothy West as LAMDA's President.
LAMDA has been offering practical examinations in ‘Communication’ and ‘Performance’ for over 130 years. Their examinations sit within the Qualifications and Curriculum Framework and are recognised by educational establishments worldwide. The exams encourage the development of clear, confident communication skills, individual interpretation, creativity and strong performance skills.
I teach students aged 6-18 (Year 2-Year 13), who may progress through the LAMDA exam grades, from Introductory exams up to Level 3 exams. Students may begin their LAMDA exam tuition journey with me at any age from 6+. The Level 3 exams are: Bronze (Grade 6), Silver (Grade 7) and Gold (Grade 8) Medal awards which attract up to 30 UCAS points. I provide the materials and monologues / scene extracts / Verse & Prose pieces. For the Level 3 exams, students will also bring along pieces of their own choosing and will need copies of the full plays for ‘Acting’ exams. Students will need copies of the the books their prose pieces are taken from in the ‘Speaking Verse and Prose’ exams.
“At LAMDA, we believe in the transformative power of the dramatic arts and the value to society of creativity, innovation, and authentic, confident communication. LAMDA examinations provide each and every learner with the skills and the confidence to succeed in life. LAMDA exams are about achievement – recognising and rewarding the endeavours of each individual – but they are also about empowerment. Our ultimate aim is to provide learners with the opportunity to develop life skills: attributes such as self-confidence and the ability to communicate clearly and present ideas.” LAMDA Examinations
